1 Inch Filter FAQs

A lightweight 1-inch air filter enables air to flow through it while capturing unwanted contaminants. It needs to be replaced frequently so your HVAC system functions properly. It's a standard filter option that blocks pollen, dust, and mold spores from circulating, creating a healthier environment for you and your family.

To achieve the best performance and protect your furnace, replace your 1 inch furnace filters every 30 to 60 days. How often you use your furnace may affect how often your filter needs to be changed. If smokers live in your home, you have multiple pets, or suffer when exposed to allergy triggers, experts advise replacing your filter at least every 30 days to ensure you have clean, breathable air in your home.

Because of their larger surface area, 2 inch air filters offer better filtration and last longer than 1 inch filters. Some HVAC systems only support 1 inch filters. 1 inch filters may need to be replaced more frequently, so consider your budget and specific air quality needs.

The different types of 1-inch air filters include:

Fiberglass Filters: These simple filters trap large particles of lint and dust, but are unable to capture smaller particles.

Pleated Filters: Pleated filters are more efficient than fiberglass filters. They can trap pollen, pet dander, and mold spores, making them a good choice when you want to improve your air quality.

Electrostatic Filters: These filters attract and capture particles like dust and allergens by using an

electrostatic charge and come in disposable and washable options. They’re perfect for people with allergies or pets.

HEPA Filters: While not common in 1-inch sizes, some 1 inch HEPA filters are available. They eliminate microscopic particles, including allergens and bacteria.

Carbon Filters: The activated carbon in these filters removes smoke, unpleasant odors, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in addition to capturing small particles.

Washable Filters: Washable filters need consistent cleaning to work effectively, but are convenient because they can be reused.

If your 1 inch HVAC filter gets clogged with dust and dirt, it wastes energy, limits airflow, and forces your system to work harder, compensating for the blockage as it attempts to circulate air. When it does this, it can increase your power bill and could shorten the life of your HVAC unit. Replacing the HVAC filter consistently each month improves efficiency, provides better air circulation, and reduces the amount of energy it consumes.

Verify the MERV rating when you’re selecting a 1 inch filter to use in your home’s HVAC system. You’ll get better filtration when you use a MERV filter with a higher rating. Filters that are pleated have a larger surface area, so they trap more contaminants than filters with flat panels.

If you want to avoid allergy and asthma triggers, using 1 inch filters can help by trapping common allergens like pet dander, pollen, dust, and mold spores. Replacing filters frequently is the way to ensure they keep working to improve your home’s air quality.

Practical and convenient washable filters eliminate the need for disposable filters and produce less waste, making them eco-friendly. They can last for many years when they are properly maintained, making them cost-effective. Instead of buying replacements, you can clean and reuse them. They need to be cleaned regularly so debris doesn’t accumulate and damage your HVAC system, and there may be better options available to you if you or your family members suffer from allergies or asthma due to their lower filtration.

Dust and dirt can accumulate on HVAC system components when you don’t change your air filter regularly, and it could cause it to overheat or malfunction. It might then need repairs that could be expensive or even need to be replaced entirely. Change your HVAC filter regularly to avoid situations like these and protect your system.

You can filter more particles when you upgrade to a thicker air filter compared to using a 1 inch filter, but only if your HVAC system has enough capacity for a thicker one. If your HVAC system isn’t compatible with it, it could cause airflow to be restricted. Connect with a qualified HVAC technician or read your system manual if you aren’t sure if your system can handle a thicker air filter.
